Feeling Olympian this week!

Gold medal secrets revealed!

In partnership with

The intro to this week’s edition of Finding the Tips has nothing to do with golf, although golf is part of the Paris Olympics.

Last Supper controversy aside, I thought the opening ceremonies for the Olympics were incredible. And for me, as a Canadian, it reached its crescendo when Celine Dion started singing.

As someone who grew up watching Celine Dion on CBC before she became a worldwide phenomenon, I always loved her voice but I was never a huge fan. I was more into rock and folk-rock music.

I have never owned a Celine Dion record or downloaded any of her music.

But after watching her triumphant return to the world music stage at the Paris opening ceremonies, I was overcome with pride. Her voice was immaculate, powerful and awe-inspiring. In other words, her perfection exemplified the true Olympic spirit for me.

Celine Dion made this Canadian prouder than ever to be a Canuck.

Merci, Celine!

Gold medal swing secrets revealed

Johnny Miller offers secrets in the swing that deliver more power, improved accuracy, and control of the shot shape.

The two-time major champion reveals secrets related to the trail elbow, the trail hand and the glove hand.

Need to turn a slice into a draw? Johnny’s got the answer.

Need to hit a fade or a draw on demand? Johnny will show you in this video.

Maybe you need help finding the bottom of your swing arc. Or perhaps you need to know how far away from the ball you should stand. Johnny has clear tips for each.

And the beauty of his tips is that you can implement them easily. Just practice the positions and movements he reveals in this video. You can do it at home, at the office or on the range. Just follow Johnny’s advice.

Johnny Miller didn’t win 25 PGA Tour titles and two major championships by accident. Implement them into your game and watch your scores drop.

Add loft to your short game

Those golfers who like to play a chip-and-run style of short game on the golf course can sometimes have difficulties when there is not much green to work with.

Andrew Lewis Golf shows us how to achieve most of our loft needs at address. If you need to add loft so you can get up and down, the first things you should do is open the clubface at address. As you open the face, you need to lower the handle or the grip of the club so that you can control the direction of the shot.

The ball should be in the middle of your stance or slightly forward of middle. At the same time, you need to widen your stance slightly.

Andrew advocates a dead-arm (very little wrist cock) swing with a relatively short backswing. The result is a very high chip/pitch that stops quickly.

If you need to generate even more height and better stopping power, Andrew wants you to take the same address position (ball forward in stance, wider stance). But instead of a short swing with little wrist cock, he wants us to have a more handsy swing, with the wrists hinging in the backswing, then re-hinging after impact.

The ability to hit the ball higher when you are short-sided will help you save strokes. Practice these shots and lower your scores.

Keep your lead arm straight

“Keep your left arm straight.”

When I first started playing golf, everyone harped at me to keep my lead arm straight. But do the pros really do that?

Giles Gill Golf shows us that they do…. Ish.

Studies of the best golfers in the world show that they keep the lead arm straight for most of the backswing. But at the top of the backswing, the lead arm has about six degrees of elbow bend and they hold that amount of bend until impact, when it grows to eight degrees.

As they follow through to full release, with both arms and the club shaft roughly parallel to the ground, the elbow bend of the lead arm has just four degrees of elbow bend.

Four, six and eight degrees of elbow bend is still pretty straight. And maintaining that level of straightness in the lead arm creates a wide swing arc and great power through impact. That translates to more distance and improved control.

Giles shows us drills to ensure we keep the lead arm as straight as our bodies and range of motion allows.

Follow these tips and exercise the drills he gives us and we’ll all be hitting the ball farther, straighter and with less effort. That’s a win-win-win!
