Three videos that hit home!

Ain't YouTube Golf grand?!

I’m one of those people who likes to hear explanations.

When I’ve got a problem in my golf game, I may superficially understand what the problem is, but I need that Eureka moment to strike me to really know what to do.

Like most golfers, I’m always looking for more distance. So when Shawn Clement’s Wisdom in Golf Lessons channel released a video called Accurate Speed with Driver, I opened it immediately.

He talked about tension and strain as killers of speed and distance in golf. He introduced a Perpetual Motion drill that helps eliminate tension and improve swing speed. Then his daughter, Savannah, demonstrated the walking drill which demonstrates the power of the brain in the golf swing. Try it…. it works!

I went into the backyard and worked both drills. Can’t wait to get on a simulator!

Next, I watched 2 Drills to Stop Topping the Driver. Andy Carter explained that you need to know whether your downswing is inside-out or outside-in.

If you’re an in-to-out swinger — like me — the bottom of your swing arc is behind the ball. This results in a push to the right at best, and weak contact off the lower part of the clubface, at worst. Andy explains that ball position with the driver should be just inside the heel of your lead foot. I’ve been teeing it up off my lead toe.

Conversely, if you tend to swing outside-in, you should tee it up further ahead in your stance. off your lead toe so you can hit the ball on the way up.

Andy also gives two downswing “pump” drills that emphasizes maintaining posture while also driving the trail knee towards the lead knee and bumping the lead hip over the lead ankle.

Chris Ryan’s latest video, as of this writing, tells us Your Trail Arm Really Messed Up Your Swing — and how to fix it.

He explains the correct position of the trail arm both in the backswing and the downswing. For the backswing, he uses a training aid that you can make with a wristband and a tee. This will help you keep your trail arm in a great position during the backswing.

For the downswing, he gives you a drill where you spear an alignment stick into the ground near the ball position in your stance. This will give you the feeling of your trail arm working as it should on the downswing and delivering power to the golf ball.

Each of these videos delivered the feeling of the light bulb of understanding switching on in my head. Give them a try!
